Digestion begins as soon as we start eating and takes place in several stages. Saliva chemically breaks down food as soon as it enters the mouth, while the stomach secretes gastric acid to continue breaking it down, forming chyme. About 2 to 4 hours after a meal, the chyme passes into the small intestine, where most digestion and nutrient absorption takes place thanks to pancreatic enzymes and bile from the liver. The whole process can take between 24 and 72 hours to fully complete. Nutrients are then absorbed into the bloodstream to support the body in its quest for optimal health. This is a complex process for the body, involving a series of interdependent steps that require precise coordination. Given the variety of foods we eat, our eating habits and stress factors, it's no surprise that digestive disorders can occur, since even minor imbalances can disrupt the delicate harmony of our digestive system.
Digestive disorders are common issues that can affect the gastrointestinal system and lead to various unpleasant symptoms. Here are some of the most common digestive disorders:
Heartburn (gastroesophageal reflux): Caused by the reflux of acidic stomach contents into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation behind the breastbone.
Bloating: Characterized by a feeling of swelling or fullness in the abdomen, often caused by a buildup of gas in the intestine.
Intestinal gas: When gas builds up in the intestine, it can cause flatulence, burping or abdominal pain.
Constipation: Results in stools that are difficult to pass, or episodes of slowed intestinal transit.
Diarrhea: Characterized by loose or liquid stools and can be caused by infection, food intolerance or other factors.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): A chronic digestive disorder that causes abdominal pain, bloating and changes in bowel habits.
Gastric and duodenal ulcers: Lesions that form in the stomach or upper part of the small intestine, often caused by a bacterial infection (Helicobacter pylori) or prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Celiac disease: An autoimmune disease in which consuming gluten causes damage to the small intestine, leading to digestion and nutrient-absorption problems.
Bile reflux: When bile flows back up into the stomach and can cause heartburn and pain.
Gastrointestinal infections: Caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites, and can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
As part of our overall company approach, we hand-pick and self-produce our plants, favoring synergy between the different components of the ecosystem.
We use these plants, together with our hive materials, in our Ballot-Flurin preparations to naturally support optimal, harmonious digestion:
Rosemary: Rosemary is rich in antioxidants and beneficial compounds that stimulate bile secretion by the liver, supporting fat digestion. It can also help relieve bloating and gas.
Fennel: Fennel contains essential oils that help relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, easing spasms and intestinal discomfort. It can also promote better digestion and relieve gas.
Rhubarb: Rhubarb has traditionally been used as a natural laxative to relieve occasional constipation. It contains compounds that stimulate intestinal peristalsis, making it easier for stools to pass.
Chicory root: Chicory root contains prebiotic fiber that feeds the good bacteria in the gut, supporting a healthy gut flora and optimal digestion.
Lemon: Lemon is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which help stimulate bile production and support fat digestion. Drinking warm water with lemon juice can be a good way to stimulate the digestive system.
Dandelion leaf: Dandelion leaves are diuretic and rich in fiber, which can help support kidney function and relieve bloating. They also promote bile production, contributing to better digestion.
Mint vinegar: Mint vinegar, particularly peppermint-based, can help relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn) by relaxing the muscles of the esophagus and supporting digestion.
Honey: Honey is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help soothe irritation of the gastrointestinal lining and relieve symptoms of mild indigestion.
It's essential to note that everyone can react differently to these plants, so it's recommended to seek advice from a healthcare professional who can understand the causes of your discomfort and guide you toward a treatment suited to your symptoms.
